The Port of Gibraltar: A Strategic Maritime Hub
Situated at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, the Port of Gibraltar is a vital maritime hub renowned for its excellence in the bunkering sector. Over the past decade, it has solidified its position as the largest bunker port by volume in the Mediterranean.
MH Bland has been serving ships passing through this key location since 1810, providing essential maritime services to the global shipping community. The port offers a comprehensive range of bunkering solutions, with multiple suppliers delivering fuel both at anchorage and via ex-pipe methods. A wide selection of fuel grades and distillates is available to meet the diverse needs of vessels transiting the Strait. Additionally, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is now available locally, further enhancing the port’s fuel supply capabilities.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, bunker barges achieve delivery rates of up to 1,000 metric tonnes per hour, ensuring efficiency and reliability.
The Bay of Gibraltar features 14 designated anchorage slots primarily used for bunkering, as well as Underwater Hull Cleaning (UWHC) and Ship-to-Ship (STS) operations.
Beyond bunkering, a range of essential maritime services—including crew changes, lube oil and spare parts delivery, Cash-to-Master (CTM) delivery, and stores/provisions supply—are seamlessly conducted alongside bunkering activities. These services are also available Off Port Limits (OPL) at 1.5 NM east of Gibraltar, while for crew and personnel attending Off Port Limits B (located 6.5 miles southeast of Europa Point), vessels do not need to stop or anchor but can simply slow down to 5 knots for smooth operations.
Within the inner harbour, dedicated berths cater to cruise liners, superyachts, and smaller vessels requiring bunkers ex-wharf. With its strategic location and comprehensive maritime services, the Port of Gibraltar remains a preferred choice for vessels navigating the Mediterranean.
