Algeciras General Information

MH Bland opened an office in the fast-developing port of Algeciras in 2002. It’s container terminal, ferry links with North Africa, coal terminal and refinery have made it one of the fastest growing ports in Europe, offering a wide range of services.

Algeciras is located on the western side of the Bay of Gibraltar, at the crossroads between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its strategic location and deep draft have made it the leading container port in Spain, 5th in Europe, and ranked 25th in the world. The CEPSA Gibraltar-San Roque refinery plays a crucial role in the port’s development as a bunkering hub, serving both Gibraltar and Algeciras.

  • Largest Anchorage: Algeciras port can provide the largest anchorage of the Bay, offering extensive berths with deep-water drafts of 21 meters.
  •
  • Transit Visas: Transit visas for off-signers can be issued within 48hrs, with the airports of Malaga, Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar within a convenient range.
  •
  • Spares & Provisions: Spares and provisions may be cleared 7 days a week.

CONTAINERS

The Port of Algeciras is equipped to handle “Triple E” mega-ships operated by Maersk Line and employs the most advanced equipment for loading and unloading operations. The HTTI terminal was the first semi-automated terminal in the Mediterranean, launching operations in May 2010, with a current capacity of 1.6 million TEU. APM Terminals Algeciras has over 4500 meters of berthing space, with deep-water berths of 17 meters. They operate 19 dock cranes (8 for super post-Panamax vessels) and 59 RTG (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes. The HTTI Algeciras terminal, a public terminal, features a maneuvering area of 57,621 square meters, with two dock alignments of 550/650 meters. The berth drafts are 18.5 meters and 17.5 meters, respectively.

LIQUID BULKS

The Port of Algeciras is Spain’s national leader in liquid bulk trade, handling up to 25 million tons per year. The CEPSA Gibraltar-San Roque refinery has a 60-meter-deep anchorage, which allows tankers of up to 350,000 deadweight tons (DWT) to dock. The seven berths total 1500 meters in length and handle various cargoes with a discharge capacity of up to 12,000 m3/hour. These facilities can berth tankers up to 175,000 DWT, with drafts ranging from 6 to 20 meters. The EXOLUM terminal, operating from Dique Norte, has a tank capacity of 203,144 m3 for refined cargoes. This facility also handles bunker barges with a pumping capacity of 500 m3 per hour. EVOS terminal has a storage capacity of 403,000 m3, distributed across 22 tanks. The dock can accommodate ships of up to 225,000 DWT. The expansion project for EVOS aims to increase its storage capacity to 1,286,649 m3 with 36 tanks and 3 new berths.

SOLID BULKS

Algeciras handles around 2 million tons of solid bulk traffic annually, mainly coal and minerals. The ACERINOX stainless steel factory has its own port facilities for importing raw materials and exporting finished products. The terminal features a 250-meter quay with a 9.5-meter draft and operates with two gantry cranes.

RO-RO

More than 275,000 industrial vehicles transit through the Port of Algeciras annually via the Ro-Ro services connecting to the ports of Ceuta and Tanger Med. Strong commercial relations between Spain and Morocco increase trade between Algeciras and North Africa. Several shipping companies provide services on this route.

NAVAL REPAIRS

Algeciras is home to experienced local specialists in naval repairs, with equipment and personnel that comply with the EU’s stringent regulations. The natural conditions of the Bay shelter repair work from the winds and currents originating from the Strait of Gibraltar. The CERNAVAL shipyard, located in Campamento on the southern side of the Bay, operates one dry dock (400 meters x 50 meters), one floating dock (176 meters x 26 meters), and repair berths totaling 500 meters in length.

Recent Updates and Developments:

  • In February 2025, the ports of Algeciras, Málaga, and the Antequera Dry Port, along with the Andalusian Government, formed an alliance to transform Andalusia into a key logistics platform in southern Europe, enhancing regional competitiveness and sustainability.
  • In 2023, the Port of Algeciras handled a total traffic of 104.7 million tons, a 2.3% decrease from 2022, influenced by route diversions due to the Red Sea conflicts. However, container traffic saw an increase of 10.5% in full exports (source).
